North Carolina commit Brevin Wilson has a “not quite right” way of carrying his stick, which you see a lot in oddball killers that finish far beyond what most players can.

Reminds me of a Kavanaugh, small, but you almost never notice his size playing into the game. He’s fully willing and capable of leaning on a defender at a near 45 degree angle to gain leverage and soak up their efforts to be physical.

Can finish highlight reel level goals, but you wouldn’t notice that in line drills before the game.  If you didn’t scout anything and showed up and watched warm ups, you may not spot him as the guy about to drop 6+ points on you.

Willing to sell out to score goals which is a very Kavenaugh-esque trait and that makes him crazy fun to watch because he’s willing to sacrifice his body to get the single.

Will get after GBs and attack the cage and has the mentality of a true “goal hawk”.  He is like a dog that loves squirrels.  He sees a ball on the deck and thinks, GOAL!

OFFENSIVE TRAITS…

  • Deadly on the wraparound from X…
He’s small, but he’s shifty quick, so even against bigger defenders, they aren’t able to use their size to push him off line as they have to keep their feet moving so they don’t get smoked.
  • Not a “sniper” but with hands free can bury the rock…
In fact, Inside Lacrosse rated his shooting a 4, but his finishing a 4.5.  Granted I saw a highlight cut showing all positives, but to me, he looks like a 4.5+ “finisher” even if he doesn’t fully bring smoke as a shooter.  In and around the crease, from inside 5 to 8 yards, the dude is a killer even if it isn’t pretty.
  • Can get underneath his guy from the wing…
If defenders cheat high or low, or just get caught with their feet planted while he’s dodging from the wing, he can make them pay.
  • Excellent option for the second dodge out of a set…
If he gets the ball in the area of 10 or 12 yards, and there isn’t help, he doesn’t need to cover a lot of ground to get to the rack and bury it.  More proof that he’s a born finisher of the rock.
  • Rides well, hustles, and seems to play well within a riding scheme…
Again, I’m watching a highlight cut, but in the “positive plays” that were included, he showed both hustle, and willingness to be disciplined as part of the fuller riding scheme.

From Inside lacrosse’s analysis of Brevin…

Wilson’s game relies on his quick first step and explosiveness dodging. From there he does a great job reading the defense and either turning the corner or separating to clear his hands as a feeder.

Wilson had somewhat of a breakthrough performance at Main Stage, as it felt like he was almost always at the end of plays, attacking defenses with an elite first step and superb vision. While he’s just 5’7, he possesses a rather well-rounded skill set and has excellent hands that allow him to move keepers (perhaps on occasion, even his older brother Goose, a Top 50 recruit and Carolina commit in goal). The younger Wilson is just as and fearless and quick in his own way, and he really just didn’t have much too much trouble at all getting topside or his hands free for a pinpoint feed during his two days in College Park.

MY IMPRESSION OF THIS KID…

  • He’s not the fastest player in the class, but he’s quick like a jitter bug.
  • He plays much bigger than his size, and he effectively soaks checks and is willing to take punishment for the payoff of a goal.  You can’t coach that.
  • A legit finisher of the rock and fairly deadly from inside 8 yards.
  • People hate comparisons, but the Kavanaugh’s and Ryder Garnsey come to mind.  He doesn’t carry his stick in a traditional manner, but he is a killer none the less, will score some sick goals both within sets, in transition and while the ball is on the deck.
  • Capable as a feeder, high IQ.
  • There is a ton to like about this kid and UNC picked up a solid guy that could outperform his #48 ranking when all is said and done.
